Streetcar/Light Rail Northern Extension Study

The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA),
the city of Kansas City, Mo., and Jackson County, Mo., created a partnership in 2010 to study
and identify opportunities for a downtown streetcar and Jackson County commuter rail transit services.
In 2012, these efforts resulted in the adoption of the Downtown Streetcar project as a locally preferred alternative in our region’s long range transportation plan. The city of Kansas City, Mo., has continued
to lead efforts to contract streetcar project engineering, secure project financing, initiate construction
and coordinate other supporting activities.

The Streetcar/Light Rail Northern Extension Study will build on past work and seek to identify the
locally preferred alternative for extending the streetcar line from the River Market district into
North Kansas City, Mo., including a crossing of the Missouri River.

Study Area

The study area will evaluate corridor options from the current street project terminus in the River Market district north into North Kansas City, Mo., including a crossing of the Missouri River.
